The precise machined flare does a very good job of sealing. Written by Cole Quinnell and Posted with Permission of CarTechBooks. There are quite a few things to do before hoisting the transmission into place. This determines the gap between the two components when the clutch is released. American Powertrain supplies a Wilwood master cylinder and an adjustable firewall mount bracket. This mimics the position of the 4-speed shifter these Chevelles originally had. By supplying 12-volt power to the solenoid, the pressure is removed, letting you slide into reverse more easily. Part Number: FST-30382-KIT Not Yet Reviewed This bracket is key to the installation, because the master cylinder needs to be mounted at a downward angle on the firewall to keep the angle between the cylinder bore and the pushrod within system limitations. There are several combinations of gear ratios available, including a 2.66:1 and 2.97:1 first-gear ratio, and a choice of either a 0.63:1 or 0.50:1 sixth gear. Another significant advantage is that it can bolt up to a Muncie-style bellhousing, allowing you to retain your existing bellhousing and mechanical clutch setup. The lines that American Powertrain sells are braided steel for better protection and appearance. The frame on this car is boxed using an ABC Performance Frame Boxing Kit (see Chapter 1 for details), so we also used an ABC Performance Transmission X-Mbr. We used an installation kit from American Powertrain. TH700R4, 4L60E, 4L65E and 4L70E . Each of these transmissions is significantly different from the others, and comes with its own set of installaÂtion requirements. The engine is less stressed on the highÂway, which means youâre less stressed, and the ride is quieter with lower engine speed. An air gap of .150 to .200 inch is what American Powertrain calls for, but the comÂpany says you can run as little as 0.100 inch of air gap. The kit includes conical shims that fit over the American Powertrain transmission collar to reduce the air gap. Take A Sneak Peak At The Movies Coming Out This Week (8/12) Soundtrack Sunday: The 2021 Golden Globes Nominees Playlist; Hereâs some HollyGOOD news: Lady Gagaâs dogs are safe and sound! Itâs an affordable overdrive that fits under the factory floor sheet metal and is strong enough for moderate performance engines. Both fifth and sixth gears are overdrives in the T56 Magnum. There are also many styles of shifter handle to choose from, including a muscle-car-looking Hurst kit from American Powertrain. You need to be very precise in this measurement, and check it at three different places on the throwout bearing. If you do not have enough air gap and are using a bellhousing without a block plate, switching to a scattershield and using the block plate adds between .200 and .250 inch of air gap. You can use the social sharing buttons to the left, or copy and paste the website link:  https://www.chevydiy.com/swap-overdrive-transmissions-chevelle-step-step/. You can scrounge salvage yards looking for useable transmissions. The TKO is a significant step up in strength and options, as far as the gear ratios go. After selecting a structure, the player can designate where to place the blueprint. Click the button below and we will send you an exclusive deal on this book. All of the automatic transmissions accept a traditional GM transmission mount. The 4L60E is essentially a computer-controlled version of the TH700R4, so installation is very similar. Using a straightedge, measure from the bellhousing mounting face on the block to the tips of the pressure plate fingers where the throwout bearing rides. The master cylinder can have a reservoir mounted directly on top or remotely with the provided parts. There is a bit of pressure on the shifter to keep you from selectÂing reverse instead of fifth. There are two versions of the TKO available: the TKO600, with a torque input rating of 600 ft-lbs, and the TKO500, with a rating of 500 ft-lbs. Naturally, you never know exactly what the condition of a salvage-yard component is, so a rebuild may be part of the price equation. I recommend you use Mobile 1 synthetic, and change the fluid after the first 500-mile break-in period. You can also purchase them brand new, usually with desirable upgrades to work great in your older muscle car. If you use a scattershield with a block plate, bolt the block plate to the back of the engine and measure from this surface. Tighten the bolts in a criss-cross pattern. These days there are more boxes that can tolerate high power and heavy cars and still offer great shiftÂing and overdrive gears. Thereâs a lot riding on these bolts, and ARP has designed them specifiÂcally for this type of application, with heads designed to give accurate torque readings. Early ChevÂelles may need the toe panel on the passenger side of the floor tunnel to be hammered slightly for clearance. The connection for using an electric speedometer is on the passengerâs side of the tailshaft housing. An overdrive transmission is one of the most rewarding upgrades you can make to your Chevelle. The QuickTime scattershields are machined properly and fit well. However, this car will see such a variety of use, including high-speed road courses, that the 0.50:1 sixth will be more valuable. You can purchase a new crossmember specifiÂcally made to bolt this transmission in a Chevelle from Bowtie Overdrives and a variety of other companies, or you can slide the original crossmemÂber back in the open C-channel frame and drill new holes in the frame rails. Itâs also nearly the same overall length as these early autoÂmatic transmissions, although the rear mount is located approximately 6 inches farther rearward. It is also the most economical of the Tremec aftermarket transmissions. The other half of the hydraulic clutch system is the master cylinder, which needs to be mounted on the firewall and connected to the clutch pedal. While the adjustÂment of this cable is not an exact science, it is critical that the cable be installed and the length be adjusted to the correct range. The big daddy of the Tremecs is the T56 Magnum 6-speed. Moving into manual transmisÂsion options, this is a good time to be a fan of shifting your own gears. You need to modify your factory shifter with a converÂsion kit from ShiftRight, or install an aftermarket shifter for a TH200R4 available from B&M, Hurst, TCI, and others. If the air gap is not large enough, American Powertrain offers a 1/4-inch spacer to install between the bellhousing and engine block. Too little, and the clutch is partially engaged when the pedal is at rest, causing the clutch to slip. Fully dressed with torque converter and fluid, it weighs approximately 240 pounds, while a TH400 weighs about 180 pounds. These systems plug into the transmission and offer an easy-to-use handheld interface, asking you basic questions and doing the rest of the work for you. Of course, if you are buying a crate engine or canât get all the original components, the aftermarket will come to your rescue. The best news is that this transÂmission doesnât require any floor modifications. You can use a mechaniÂcal throwout bearing or convert to a hydraulic clutch system. Tighten them firmly, but do not over-tighten them. Each of these factors varies greatly between automatic and manual overdrive transmissions. The one on the left fits an LS engine, while the one on the right fits Gen I small- and big-block engines. This is plenty strong to support the heavy transmissions, and looks nice and smooth. On the 1968â1972 Chevelles, Iâve been told that you only need to add clearance near the transmission lines, while older Chevelles require more work. Stepping up to a 5- or 6-speed manual provides more gearing options for a road course and even lets you build your car with ratios more tailored for the exact type of driving and racing you like to do. The 4L60E is essentially a comÂputer-controlled version of the TH700R4, so installation is very simiÂlar. There are also 4L65E and 4L70E versions with different internal parts, which were later incorporated into the 4L60E. For LS engines, there are two different pilot bearings. You will make the electrical connections to the transmission after it is installed, but itâs good to be familiar with the locations of the connections before the transmission is tucked up inside the transmission tunnel. Route the lines through one of the notched openings in the transmission case. The clutch assembly goes together like any tradiÂtional clutch, using the provided clutch-disc alignÂment tool to center the disc to the throwout bearing while you install the pressure plate. The two key parts of this kit are the adjustable master cylinder mount bracket and the adjustable pushrod that connects to the pedal with a Heim joint. Make sure that the throwout bearing is fully seated on the transÂmission collar and that it is fully compressed. This can control up to 8 forward speeds and eight shift solenoids (plus a 16x9 table for controlling a PWM line pressure valve). You do not want any flex or movement here. The ABC Performance Transmission X-Mbr is also curved to provide room for up to 3-inch dual exhaust to run under it without losing too much ground clearance. The process is very similar to bleeding brakes. Often, a scattershield has to be installed with the headers loose, because they typically have a larger mounting flange than a production bellhousing. The two parts of the bracket sandwich the firewall for strength. One of the coolest automatic overdrive transmissions currently available is the TCI 6X 6-speed. You need to move the crossmember rearward approxiÂmately 9 inches, and I have heard cases of the heavy transmission bending stock crossmembers. The first is to prep the back of the engine. DRAC VSSB GM Speedometer Module Replacement and Calibration 1989-2002 Mixed applications 6.2L Diesel, 6.5L Diesel, TBI Gas. There are also the MicroSquirt® controller (same processor as MS-II⢠but fully-assembled, smaller and with a weatherproof connector), MicroSquirt Module (similar to MicroSquirt, but with more build-it-yourself options), and Choices include the TH200R4, the TH700R4 and its electronic cousin the 4L60E, and the 4L80E. The TH200R4 was initially shunned by the performance world because it seemed to be weaker than a TH350, and it was one of the first metric GM transmissions. The 4L60E requires an electronic controlÂler to vary shift firmness and shift points as well as torque converter lockup, while the TH700R4 uses a TV cable to moderate shifts and a simÂple wire connection to control the lockup torque converter. Use a straightedge to measure the distance between the face of the throwout bearing and the face of the bellhousing. There are also 4L65E and 4L70E versions with different internal parts, which were later incorporated into the 4L60E. For example, the conversion for this car called for an LS engine flywheel and throwout bearing, hydraulic clutch conversion, but no crossmember, because our car has boxed frame rails and we will be using the matchÂing ABC Performance crossmember. From a strength and performance perspective, the 4L80E is definitely a player. The Transmission X-Mbr is available either with (shown) and without an integrated driveshaft loop. The Tremec TKO and T-56 Magnum have electrical and mechaniÂcal speedometer outputs and an electric one. Both come with weld-on mounting tabs that weld in place on the inside of the boxed frame rails. The T-5 and TKO are 5-speeds, while the T-56 Magnum is a 6-speed. Subtract the second measurement from the first to find your air gap. $700 -K1500 rear diff with everything $700 - K1500 front suspension, diff, driveshafts, hubs, rotors, calipers, everything $300 will separate. Goodwill Industries International, Inc. 15810 Indianola Drive Rockville, Md 20855 (800) Goodwill [email protected] Goodwill Industries International is a 501(C)(3) ⦠It accepts a traditional rubber or polyurethane transmission mount. The Tremec T-5 has been proÂduced for a very long time and was original equipment in third-generation Camaros and Firebirds, as well as the popular 5.0-liter Mustangs. As with other LS components, a massive number of computercontrol, harness, and electronic equipment options exist for this popular engine platform. Its biggest drawback is a conserva¬tive torque-input rating of 300 ft-lbs. The 4L80E is a much larger transÂmission with stronger internal comÂponents. To set up the American Powertrain hydraulic clutch system properly, measuring the distance between the face of the throwout bearing and the fingers on the pressure plate is critical. Basically, you only run across this if a person is trying to keep the car original, or if it will be used almost exclusively as a race car that wouldnât benefit from a lower final ratio of 1:1 in the transÂmission. A steering-wheel-mounted paddle shifter is an optional upgrade. The ⦠On the driverâs side of the tailshaft is the mechanical speedometer output. It actually has proven to be durable, and many feel that itâs as strong as the larger TH700R4 transmission. The T-56 Magnum is the newest Tremec transmission. However, you donât need to cut out the sheet metal and fabricate a new tunnel as you do for some of the larger overdrive manual transÂmissions. Take measurements on the passengerâs and driverâs side of the block to make sure you have the straightedge square on the clutch fingers. The current version offered by Tremec has been upgraded for strength; howÂever, it is only rated for use behind engines making 300 ft-lbs of torque or less. If you do not use a speedometer cable, you need to install a plug, available from American Powertrain. The company offers kits for all of the Tremec transmissions to make retrofitting the transmissions into early muscle cars easier. The measurement should be the same at all three places. TCI designed an easy-to-use system that lets you set up and tune the transmission shift characteristics with a simple hand¬held interface. This can damage the engine mounts. They can be built to withstand high levels of power. The bolts going into the transmission are usually metric, but otherwise itâs the same mount originally used on Muncie and TH350 transmissions. This transmission is based on the 4L80E but gives you six forward gears. The rear mount is only about 1 inch farther back compared to a TH350âs, and these transmissions also accept a traditional rubber or polyurethane mount. It is available with only one set of gear ratios, featuring a 2.95:1 first-gear and a 0.63:1 overdrive. Inside the car, the linkage and Heim joint that are part of the American Powertrain kit bolt to the clutch pedal where the original clutch linkage connected. The best way to do this is with an afterÂmarket cable and bracket made for the type of carburetor or fuel-injecÂtion system on your Chevelle. These measurements are perpendicular to a reference point in the chassis, which is the bottom of the frame rails, so you have to subtract 90 degrees from what you measure. Cables and brackets are available from B&M, Lokar, and others. The TKO uses a late-model bolt pattern at the bellhousing, so a new bellhousing or scattershield is required. Generally, people use a slightly larger numerical rear gear ratio with this setup. They offer engine management systems for both EFI and carbureted engines (carbureted LS engines are available from Chevrolet Performance as crate or carb-converted Gen III/IV engines). These are QuickTime scattershields for the TKO and Magnum using hydraulic clutches. There is also a variant of this transmission called the 4L85E with some stronger internal components. The hydraulic throwout bearing rides on the transmission collar. It is the smallest of the Tremec transmissions, and it can be swapped into a Chevelle without major floor surgery but you need to cut a hole in the floor for the shifter, even if you have an original 4-speed car. The TH200R4 has the traditional (pre-LS) bellhousing bolt pattern and uses the same flexplates and 27-spline slip-yoke as a Powerglide or a TH350. You need to modify the floor for transmission clearance, so you may want to mock-up the trans/shifter/seat location before deciding in which position to mount the shifter. Click to get the latest Buzzing content. Building a modern performance muscle car without an overdrive transÂmission is extremely rare. You can measure it at the bellhousing flange on the engine or the flat surface at the end of the transmission tailshaft. Bolt the bellhousing onto the transmission. Companies such as American Powertrain offer installation kits for these transmissions that include a curved sheet-metal section that can be welded in to raise and widen the transmission tunnel. -4l60e with converter. It has a .67:1 overdrive and a 2.74:1 first-gear ratio, making it a close-ratio automatic overdrive transmission, which is desirable for drag-race-style acceleration, and can be advantageous on autocross and road courses.
